Valley's Johnson, Junginger Named Semifinalists for Prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program (04/22/21)

April 22, 2021 | Valley High School seniors Parker Johnson and Dorothy Junginger have been named semifinalists for the prestigious 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) announced Thursday, April 22.

There are a total of eight semifinalists from the state of Iowa.

"From nearly 3.6 million graduating high school seniors from across the country, over 6,500 students were identified as candidates in this program, and 625 semifinalists were selected," the IDOE said in its news release. "These semifinalists form the pool from which the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars will be chosen."

The 2021 U.S Presidential Scholars will be announced in May.

According to the U.S. Department of Education's website, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to "recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors." Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars—one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
