Western Hills Staff Percentage Impacted by COVID-19 Results in School Transition to Online Learning (11/10/20)

Nov. 10, 2020

West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) consistently monitors the impact of COVID-19 throughout our district. When the ability to staff classrooms or departments is significantly impacted, district leadership will consider whether or not to temporarily move a school online.

As of Tuesday, Nov. 10, more than 33% of Western Hills teachers and support staff are currently absent due to either testing positive with COVID-19 or needing to quarantine due to being considered a close contact.

We collaborated with the Polk County Health Department and determined the need to temporarily transition Western Hills to online learning for Thursday, Nov. 12. Friday, Nov. 13, is a professional development day with no school for students.

WDMCS has applied for a districtwide waiver with the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) that would allow us to keep the entire district online through Wednesday, Dec. 2. No activities would be allowed in the building. If the districtwide waiver is denied, we plan to apply for a Western Hills-specific waiver.

Western Hills students will continue to receive instruction from their teachers. They will experience learning and connect with each other through a daily schedule that provides flexibility and creativity.

By working together, we will continue to support our students this school year.
