“I’m very excited to get this project started,” Dr. Remy said. “It’s very important to us at West Des Moines Community Schools that all students are post-secondary, career, and life-ready, and this addition will provide those opportunities for our students to explore various career pathways and connect with businesses in our community. It’s truly a vision for our future.”

As part of the Valley Southwoods 10-Year Facilities Master Plan, the 39,000-square-foot addition will provide space for students to study a variety of vocational and technical fields, including culinary arts, metals, and robotics.

Designed by Shive-Hattery, the $22 million expansion and remodel is planned to be complete in August 2023.

“When Shive-Hattery started working with the district  to create this addition, it was apparent that we needed to flip the script on what CTE means for students at West Des Moines schools,” said architect Mike Kleene. “So instead of a shop located on the back-side of the school … we’re putting this right smack-dab in front of the building to make this a model environment for student learners.”

In addition to providing expanded learning spaces, the structure will serve as an ICC-500 rated structure to protect the entire building population in the event of a weather-related emergency. Other enhancements planned as part of this project include transitioning the existing media center into a presentation hall, remodeling the current food service kitchen spaces, and renovating the main entrance to create a secure entry.
