Dr. Matt Adams Named Superintendent of West Des Moines Community Schools (04/29/2022)
April 29, 2022 | The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Board of Education is pleased to announce that a contract for superintendent has been offered to Dr. Matt Adams pending Board approval at the May 9, 2022, regular meeting. Adams will succeed Dr. Lisa Remy, who announced last December she was selected as the new executive director of School Administrators of Iowa (SAI), effective July 1.
Dr. Adams is currently the superintendent for the Woodward Granger Community School District, a position he has held since 2019. As superintendent, his “student-first” philosophy anchors the decisions he and his staff make each day, a viewpoint which aligns with WDMCS. In addition to supporting building principals, Adams also oversees all components of operations for the district including maintenance, safety, construction, technology, purchasing, and food service. Woodward-Granger CSD serves approximately 1,300 students and 230 employees.
Prior to leading Woodward Granger, Dr. Adams spent a decade with the Ankeny Community School District, both in principal and COO/associate superintendent roles. He began his career in the classroom, teaching for Des Moines Public Schools. An Iowa native, Adams has spent the past 25 years serving districts across central Iowa and is eager to use his experience and passion for making a difference in the lives of students to make a positive impact in WDMCS.
“West Des Moines Community Schools has a rich tradition of excellence in education. Being asked to serve as your next superintendent is a tremendous honor and I am humbled to have the opportunity to lead this premier organization,” Adams said. “I look forward to working side by side with the Board, district leadership, teachers, and staff to ensure we provide an exceptional educational experience for each and every student served by the district.”
Early in the school year, the Board retained HYA & Associates to lead the district through the process of hiring a new superintendent. The firm led the district through a thorough process in collaboration with students, staff, families, and the community to develop a list of desired characteristics to guide the search. The results of a survey and focus groups included many desired characteristics, including experienced educator and leader, visionary leader, advocate for equity, school/community partner, and more.
Students, staff, families, and community members were also involved in providing important feedback during interviews with three final candidates. We thank everyone who gave of their time during this important process.
”Dr. Adams has an amazing track record of building relationships with students, staff, and the community,” said Board President Lonnie Dafney. “His passion for students will help West Des Moines Community Schools continue to achieve the academic excellence we are proud of. He shares the vision and priorities we established in our Characteristics of a Leader profile that was developed in partnership with our students, staff, and community. We are excited to have him join WDMCS and look forward to him leading this next chapter.”
Adams and his wife, Kim, have three grown children. Kim is a teacher with Ankeny Community School District. We look forward to Adams beginning his tenure with West Des Moines Community Schools. His new position will officially begin on July 1, 2022.
