Update on WDMCS Mask Recommendations (1/25/22)

Jan. 25, 2022 | As you may recall, WDMCS adjusted the 2021-22 Return-to-Learn plan based on a Sept. 13, 2021, federal court ruling. The Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction against the enforcement of Iowa Code section 280.31, which banned Iowa school districts from issuing mask mandates for students, staff, and community members present on school grounds.

WDMCS has been waiting for a decision in this case, and today we learned that the preliminary injunction has been vacated. This means that the WDMCS can no longer require masks, effective immediately. As with any situation, we will work with individual families to address specific needs. Masks will continue to be highly encouraged while indoors during school hours.

Masks will continue to be required on WDMCS school buses, in accordance with a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) order issued on Jan. 29, 2021.

We are thankful for the flexibility, grace, and understanding shown all year long by our students, families, staff, and community. Whether you choose to wear a face mask or not, we will remain respectful and sensitive to everyone’s decision. Please continue to be respectful of the choices others make as we navigate the final months of this school year together.

Thank you,

West Des Moines Community Schools
