ORIGINAL POST: April 20, 2021 | Organized by the Valley High School Student Council, Valley's annual Dance Marathon is set for Saturday, April 24. The event runs from 6-10 p.m., and will be held inside and outside of Valley Fieldhouse.
The Dance Marathon is the largest fundraising event Valley's Student Council manages. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Valley was unable to host a Dance Marathon event in 2020. In 2019, Valley Student Council raised roughly $10,000.
All of the proceeds raised for Valley's Dance Marathon benefit the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, as part of the movement established by Miracle Network Dance Marathon and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The event helps families like West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) employees Becky and Zac Sinram, who shared their son's story prior to the 2019 event and how the Children's Hospital impacted their lives.
“Since 1991, students across North America have raised more than $250 million for local children's hospitals,” Miracle Network Dance Marathon says on its website.
Walk-in participants the day of the event are allowed, however the total number will be limited. Participants are required to raise a minimum $20 and pay an additional $10 registration fee, but anyone can donate online.
Some of the fun planned this year include inflatables, Spikeball, giant Jenga and Connect 4, and corn hole, among many other activities. Plenty of pre-packaged food and beverages will also be available for participants. Additionally, there will be opportunities to win prizes after each hour of the event.
Participants are required to wear face masks at this year's event and practice social distancing.
