UPDATE: March 10, 2021
The prescribed burn of prairie areas on the south and east sides of the Valley High School campus this week has been postponed due to inclement weather and wind conditions.
The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) will announce a new prescribed burn date when it is known.
ORIGINAL: March 5, 2021
The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) will conduct a prescribed burn of prairie areas on the south and east sides of the Valley High School campus, 3650 Woodland Ave., between March 8 and March 10 as weather permits.
The burning of existing prairie areas enhances native vegetation, stimulates the growth of native species, and helps eliminate weeds. The burned areas will initially appear bare and blackened but will produce new growth.
Safety is a top priority for the prescribed burn, which will occur as weather and wind conditions allow. Additionally, West Des Moines emergency services will be notified prior to burning.
