Lack of Interest Results in No K-12 WDMCS Online School for 2021-22 School Year (05/19/21)

May 19, 2021 | In February, we reached out to families to gauge their interest in an online school. Based on positive survey responses, we believed there was enough interest to proceed with the next steps, which included developing logistics for each grade and submitting an application to the Iowa Department of Education for a district license. We learned in late March that our application was approved.

In early April, we shared with families the details about WDMCS Online, an alternative to our in-person classroom setting. Families were then asked to complete a form confirming their choice of online learning for their student next year. The information included minimum enrollment numbers at both the elementary grade level and secondary course level to be able to proceed.

Unfortunately, fewer than 250 families completed the form indicating they wanted WDMCS Online for their students this fall. Because these students were spread out from PK-12, we determined there were not enough students to meet the minimum requirements for this year. We are able to offer online learning this fall for our PK students because it is a half-day program and we have adequate staff resources to support online instruction.

We are disappointed that WDMCS Online cannot be an option for our K-12 families for the 2021-22 school year. Our hope is to reach a broader audience of families outside of the district prior to the 2022-23 school year. This will allow families to open enroll into the district prior to the March 2022 deadline, hopefully increasing the number of families who choose online and making it possible to offer WDMCS Online.

District leadership will continue to evaluate guidance from national, state, and local health authorities over the summer and determine what COVID-19 safety guidelines may change and what may remain in place this fall. We will continue to prioritize the health and safety of our WDMCS staff and students as we return to in-person learning.
