The information on this page has been updated for the 2020-21 school year. Please see the 2019-20 Valley and Valley Southwoods course description catalogs if needed.
Students must carry at least five and one-half (5.5) credits for letter grades and maintain a 3.4 GPA for two consecutive semesters in the same year to qualify for an Academic Letter. A student electing to take a class Pass/No Pass should note that the class does not count as a letter grade/credit when determining whether a student qualifies for the Academic Letter.
Academic Award Ceremony
Annually in October, an academic recognition ceremony will take place at Valley High School. Students who meet the criteria for the award during their freshman, sophomore, or junior years will receive an invitation to attend the ceremony. While students will receive a postcard invitation, parents and guardians can verify whether or not their student has received the award by checking the student’s schedule on Infinite Campus. It will be listed at the bottom of the student’s schedule. * The 2020-2021 event will be held virtually on Monday, October 19, 2020 at 7pm. This special event will be streamed on Valley High School’s Face page (Facebook.com/Valley.WDMCS)
What do students receive?
Students earning the Academic Award for the first time will receive a chenille letter “V” with the word “Academics” embroidered across a white banner. Students earning the Academic Award for subsequent years will receive a gold bar for each year to pin to their letter.
Do we need to alert someone if my student will attend the ceremony?
(This does not apply to the 2020-2021 school year.) During the school day on the day of the event, students receiving the award will be invited by class to attend a meeting in the cafeteria. At the meeting they will announce their intention to attend the event, and will be given instructions for the evening.
Does my student have to attend the ceremony to receive his/her award?
(For the 2020-2021 school year awards will be delivered to Onsite Students and mailed to Online Students.) No. While the ceremony is a great way to celebrate their accomplishments, we recognize not all students will be able to attend. Students are welcome to come to Student Services the day after the ceremony to pick up their award. There is no deadline to pick up the award.
