My name is Mitchell Kuhnert, and I welcome you and your family to Valley Southwoods Freshman High School. Along with my associate principal, Haley Henry, I look forward to working with you as your student starts their high school career. We strive to create a learning environment that is both challenging and supportive academically, while at the same time developing a student’s character and resiliency around our “Tradition of the Tiger” values: Thoughtfulness, Integrity, Gratitude, Empathy, and Respect.
Valley Southwoods serves approximately 720 students all in ninth grade. We like to say students begin the year with a “fresh start” and start building a resume that will help them succeed in high school and beyond. Teachers provide high-quality instruction with the unique needs of ninth-graders in mind. They create lessons that are relevant and challenging and provide support to help all students learn.
We strongly encourage students to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities as this involvement will engage them more completely in the high school experience and will further reinforce the importance of our “9” tenets outside the classroom. From start to finish, our students will gain the confidence needed to meet the demands of high school by experiencing that same structure and schedule as Valley High School students but in a smaller environment.
Ninth-grade students enroll in four core area full-credit courses, physical education, and at least one elective course each semester. Those four core classes will be:
- Physical Science*
- Geographic Cultural Studies*
- Language and Literature*
- Mathematics (Algebra A, Algebra B, or Geometry C)
