Valley Softball’s Tom Bakey to receive IGHSAU’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award

Valley softball head coach Tom Bakey will be recognized at next week’s state softball tournament as the recipient of the Golden Plaque of Distinction Award, presented by the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union.

The award honors a coach in each varsity sport who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward their school, community, and the coaching profession, a news release from IGHSAU said.

Bakey will be honored prior to the start of the Class 5A state championship at 8 p.m. July 20 at Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.

Bakey has spent 32 years at Valley, with the last 22 years serving as head coach. He’s amassed a 827-201 record with five state titles, 13 state tournament appearances, and 16 conference championships. Bakey was recognized as Softball Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010 by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and earned District Coach of the Year honors six times.

Additionally, Bakey served as a member of the IGHSAU Softball Advisory Committee from 2009-14.

Bakey and the Tigers qualified for their sixth straight state tournament after blanking Ankeny 4-0 on Tuesday in a regional final. Valley will face Johnston in the opening round at 5:30 p.m. July 17.
