“The Secret Garden” Earns 18 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards

Valley High School’s spring musical, “The Secret Garden,” has earned 18 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. This is the highest number of Iowa High School Musical Theater awards Valley High School has won since first participating in the awards in 2014-15. The production and Valley students were honored for their achievements at the 2018 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase on June 4.

The musical won four production awards: Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Student Orchestra, and Outstanding Community Engagement. The ensemble of “The Secret Garden” performed an excerpt from their production at the showcase, in celebration of the school’s receipt of an Outstanding Musical Production Award, the program’s highest honor.

Six students and student groups also earned individual awards. Seniors David Bone as “Archibald Craven,” Ethan Glenn as “Dr. Neville Craven,” Camille Mireault as “Lily,” and Lizzie Napier as “Mary Lennox” all won Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role awards. The “Dreamers” (Nick Ellis, Rachel Forney, Taylor Gion, Quince Harding, Gunner Hawthorne, Quinn Herbert, Alec Jessen, Liz Lau, Jordan Potter, Olivia Ramaekers, Claire Sattler, Cole Strelecki, Maddy Swaim, and Julie Van Kirk) and the “Mist” (Emma Bohn, Camryn Cline, Allison Hutchinson, McKenzie Paulsen, and Ellie Willse) also earned Outstanding Performance as Featured Dancers awards.

The production earned three Outstanding Achievement in a Technical, Creative, or Business Role awards for Carpentry and Painting (Hadley Abbas, Olivia Allard, Tyler Beveridge, Chase Brown, BreAnna Eigenheer, Christian Patrick, Cole Stephenson, and Ashlan Simpson), Outstanding Properties (Grace Axman, Destiny Booth, Isabella Criberi,  Marina Fredregill, Addie Frohardt, Taylor Johnson, Mia Klaric, Alina Kushekbayeva, Kathryn Rosanak, and Emily Schnoor), and Outstanding Stage Management (Lauren Anderson, Connor Bach, and Amy Wickenkamp).

“The Secret Garden” also earned special recognition awards for Performance in a Principal Role (seniors Preston Hayes as “Colin Craven” and Kate Raridon as “Martha”), Performance as a Featured Dancer (junior Lindsay Amundson as “Robin”), Featured Properties (senior Brandi Marlett), and Front of House Management (Grace Axman, Kiona Dodson, Marina Fredregill, Addie Frohardt, Taylor Johnson, Mia Klaric, Alina Kushekbayeva, Brandi Marlett, Kathryn Rosanak, and Emily Schnoor).

Hayes, junior Elizabeth Brackett, and senior Lauren Johnson represented Valley by performing in a collaborative inter-school medley led by guest Broadway music director Adam Jones and choreographer Sara Brians. The carpentry/paint team, the properties team, and the stage management team exhibited their award-winning work as part of the showcase’s Technical and Creative Achievement Gallery. Bone, Glenn, Mireault, and Napier also had the opportunity to audition to represent Valley and Iowa at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City this summer as part of the Triple Threat Award program.

Started in 2012-13, the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards are presented by the Des Moines Performing Arts non-profit organization. Almost 70 schools participated this year. Iowa Public Television will air a highlights special of the evening later this summer.
