Congratulations to Stilwell Junior High’s Team Mintosis for winning the 2019 Iowa Regional Middle School Science Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Ames Laboratory. Team Mintosis toppled Ames, the defending champion, 58-52 to claim the title.
Stilwell will now represent the Ames Laboratory/Iowa Region at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, which runs April 25-29 in Washington, D.C. Competing teams at the national event will face off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format and will be tested on a range of science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
Stilwell has never before made it to nationals, team coach Shelly Urban said.
“I am so happy and proud of all of our students and staff for their first-place finish at the Regional Science Bowl,” said Stilwell Principal Eric Boyle. “They have been close so many times before, so to break through with a win is huge accomplishment and complement to their hard work preparing for this event. I also want to congratulate all other participants for their efforts!”
Members of Team Mintosis include:
- Henry Golay
- Jackson Keith
- Owen Kouba
- Ayden Murenzi

Team Au Gold and Indian Hills Junior High’s squad—Team We Matter!—also participated at Saturday’s Iowa Regional Middle School Science Bowl. Indian Hills placed fourth.
Please join us in congratulating Team Mintosis and Stilwell for this incredible accomplishment!
