Athletics, Arts, and Activities FAQs

Q: How do the Return-to-Learn plans impact WDMCS athletics, arts, and activities?
A: Extracurricular activities will take place based on guidance from several state and local agencies, including the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa High School Athletic Association, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, Iowa High School Music Association, Iowa High School Speech Association, and the Central Iowa Metropolitan League. All athletics, arts, and activities programs will be available to start the 2020-21 school year. If the state closes schools like what occurred earlier this year due to COVID-19, then extracurricular activities are not allowed to continue.

Q: Can my student participate in extracurricular activities and/or athletics if they choose the online learning environment?
A: Students who are in the online or on-site learning environments are eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.

Q: Who decides whether or not schools can have an athletics season?
A: WDMCS will follow guidance that is provided by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The fall 2020 athletics season is expected to continue. The first day of fall sports practices at the high school is Monday, August 10. The first day of fall sports practices at the junior high level is Monday, August 24. The IHSAA and IGHSAU released additional guidance for fall sports on July 29.

Students who plan to participate in a fall sport this year should ensure their athletic paperwork is submitted via FamilyID prior to the first day of practices:
