Transportation

WDMCS offers bus transportation to families who live in either a free zone or pay zone of the student's designated school. Some areas are considered a walk zone, and bus transportation is not available. To learn more, please refer to Board Policy 711.01, which details student eligibility for busing. Contact the Transportation Department at 515-633-4902  to confirm which zone you live in. 

Free Zone Details

Free transportation is provided to the following groups meeting the listed criteria (Iowa Code Section 285.1), as determined by their primary residence:

• WDMCS students in grades K-8 living more than two miles from their assigned schools.
• WDMCS students in grades 9-12 living more than three miles away from their assigned schools.
• Involuntary transfers, who are students transferred by the district to a school other than their designated attendance center.

Pay Zone Details

Students who are not eligible for free transportation and live outside the walk zone of their assigned school can purchase bus passes.

Walk Zone Details

Each school has a designated area around the school called the walk zone where bus service is not available. 

Voluntary Transfers

A voluntary transfer is a student who attends a district school other than the assigned school due to a family request granted by the district. Voluntary transfer students are not eligible for transportation unless they meet the established criteria. Please refer to Board Policy 711.01, which details student eligibility for busing.

If you live in the paid transportation area and qualify for free or reduced-price meals, you can also apply for free or reduced-price bus fees. When you enroll online, choose "YES" for fee waivers.

WDMCS uses Travel Tracker to plan and schedule buses for field trips. Teachers, secretaries, and staff can submit their field trip requests online and view scheduled trips on a calendar.

Step 1: Create Account
If you have not created an account, register now.

Step 2: Submit Request
Once your registration is activated, you can ask for new trips and check the ones already scheduled. Travel Tracker has a video to help you with the steps. An approver, usually a principal or your supervisor, will review each request before sending it to Transportation for final approval.

Step 3: Review Status
A request is checked by an approver, often a principal or your supervisor. After the school approves it, the request goes to Transportation. Once Transportation confirms the trip, the person who requested it gets a confirmation email.

Families can request non-public transportation reimbursement through an online form.

Families must submit requests with the resident district by Dec. 1 for the first semester or full year and by May 1 for the second semester.
