Seal of Biliteracy
The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages, one of which is English, by high school graduation.
The Seal of Biliteracy:
- Values language as an asset
- Recognizes the value of language diversity and cultural identity
- Prepares students with 21st-century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society
- Provides employers, universities, and grant/scholarship providers with a method to recognize applicants for their dedication to the attainment of biliteracy
Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy will be recognized in the graduation ceremony program, receive the seal on their diploma, and have the seal on their official transcript.
Seal of Biliteracy Assessments
The Seal of Biliteracy relies on demonstrating proficiency in a given language. To be eligible to be awarded the Iowa Seal of Biliteracy, each student shall demonstrate proficiency in English and a world language through various assessments. The following assessments can be used to demonstrate proficiency.
Additional assessments may be used to prove proficiency in the world language that may be available at testing locations outside of the district. Students and families are able to choose an alternative assessment from the Iowa Department of Education list if so desired. Students must present official documentation of proficiency to the student’s counselor.
Most of the assessments incur a cost of $10-$100 depending on the assessment. Please contact your counselor if you are in need of financial assistance to help with the cost of the exams.
