To prepare for the 2021-22 school year, West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) reviewed the 2020-21 Return-to-Learn plans as required by the Iowa Department of Education. The Return-to-Learn plan was created and approved by the WDMCS Board of Education on Aug. 12, 2021, with the understanding that the plan could change based on changes made by state or federal authorities.
WDMCS adjusted the 2021-22 Return-to-Learn plan based on a Sept. 13, 2021, federal court ruling. The Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction against the enforcement of Iowa Code section 280.31, which banned Iowa school districts from issuing mask mandates for students, staff, and community members present on school grounds.
On Jan. 25, 2022, the preliminary injunction was vacated. This means that WDMCS can no longer require masks, effective immediately. As with any situation, we will work with individual families to address specific needs. Masks will continue to be highly encouraged while indoors during school hours.
Masks will continue to be required on WDMCS school buses, in accordance with a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) order issued on Jan. 29, 2021.
This court ruling preempts the amended Return-to-Learn plan that was adopted by the Board of Education on Jan. 13, 2022.
