If you have not yet signed up your 2018-19 kindergartner, follow the steps listed at the below link to get your child’s name placed on our list. If you are not sure which building attendance area you live in, please call 515-633-5101.

How do I register my child for kindergarten?

Student Placement

Students are assigned to a school based on the student’s home address and available space. If you are not sure which school’s attendance area you live in or if you want to check your child’s placement, please call District Registrar Joy Zuber at 515-633-5101.

Our kindergarten classrooms are limited to 26 students per class. Because of this, some of our buildings do get full. By getting your child’s name placed on a kindergarten list early, you will hold a spot for the 2018-19 school year.

Any student placed on our list after a building is full will be assigned—or “capped out”—to another elementary building in our district. Students who are capped out receive free transportation.

Parents are welcome to request a voluntary transfer or an open enrollment application, but we cannot guarantee placement at a requested school. We will not know if there are openings at a requested school until early August.

Schools enroll students who live within their boundary areas and any capped-out students from other buildings before placing students who voluntarily come from a
different district or school.

School Placement—Quick Reference

  • Cap Out: A capped-out student lives in one school attendance area in the WDMCS but is assigned to another elementary building in our district because the kindergarten classrooms are full at the original school. Capped-out students receive free transportation.
  • Voluntary Transfer: A voluntary transfer student lives in one school attendance area in the WDMCS but requests to attend a school in another WDMCS attendance area. Families agree to limited transportation options from the district when students are approved for a voluntary transfer.
  • Open Enrollment: An open-enrolled student lives in one district but requests to attend another. Families agree to limited transportation options from the district when students are approved for open enrollment. Open enrollment acceptance is based on available space and subject to requirements set by state law. Open-enrolled students receive school assignments in the summer.

If you have questions about cap outs, voluntary transfers, or open enrollment, please call District Registrar Joy Zuber at 515-633-5101.
