Is Your Child Ready for Life’s Big Adventures?
Let us help them explore and excel.
Registration for 2018-19 kindergartners begins Sept. 1, 2017. Classes at your neighborhood school fill up fast, as we limit class sizes in the West Des Moines Community Schools. (For more information on student placement, see the “After You Register Your Child” section below.)
How do I register my child for kindergarten?
Steps To Register
Steps 1-5 must be completed in order to be put on the waiting list. Please submit all information at once to Joy Zuber at the Learning Resource Center.
Step 1: Submit a proof of residency document.
Step 2: Submit a proof of age document.
Step 3: Fill out the kindergarten registration forms.
Step 4: Fill out and submit the Language Survey.
Please note that there are 22 different languages to choose from.
Step 5: Submit your child’s immunization record with the required immunizations (even if your child does not have their 5-year-old ones).
After You Register Your Child
- Attend Kindergarten Roundup and Storytime/Kindergarten Experience Event. This is a time to meet your child’s principal, school nurse, counselor, and kindergarten teachers and fill out additional paperwork. See the dates and times on our Kindergarten Roundup page.
- Learn more about School Placement. Schools are assigned based on the student’s home address. Information about how students are assigned to buildings is available on our Kindergarten Roundup page. If you are unsure which school your child should attend, check the district boundary map. You may also call the district registrar at 515-633-5101 to learn which area school your child will attend.
Before the First Day of School
In addition to submitting registration materials, there are additional forms required by the state for enrollment. Please submit the following health forms to your school prior to the first day of school.
Helpful Services and Resources
Nutritious & Delicious Meals
The West Des Moines Community Schools serve delicious, nutritious breakfasts and lunches at every school. Signing up for school lunch is an easy, convenient way to give your child a well-balanced and healthy meal during the school day. You can also give them a great start to the day by signing up for our breakfasts. To learn more about our nutrition services, including menus, how to track what your child is eating, and how to set up a meal account, visit www.wdmcs.org/departments/nutrition or call 515-633-5088.
Safe, Convenient Transportation
The West Des Moines Community Schools provides special services to your kindergarten students to acquaint them with riding the bus. We pick up kindergartners at their homes, unless the bus cannot safely drive there. These kindergarten stops last only for the student’s first year of school. If your kindergartner has siblings, they may use this stop as well, but all other students are required to use their regular bus stop. To learn more about our transportation services or to register for transportation, please visit www.wdmcs.org/departments/transportation or call 515-633-4902.
