Steven Schappaugh, current principal at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, has been named the next executive director of secondary education at West Des Moines Community Schools.

Schappaugh will begin his new role July 1, 2025, pending approval by the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education. 

A new position at WDMCS, the executive director of secondary education is responsible for providing leadership and support for secondary schools. The role will also build capacity and provide leadership development and professional learning to leaders across the district. 

“Steven is a proven leader with a track record of improving student outcomes, growing staff engagement, and developing leaders,” superintendent Dr. Matt Adams said. “We’re excited about the experience and expertise he brings to this new role in our district as we continue to provide high levels of programming and instruction to our junior high and high school students.”

Schappaugh has served as principal at Roosevelt for the last four years. Under Schappaugh’s direction, Roosevelt experienced growth on Panorama student and staff surveys and Gallup employee engagement each year. Schappaugh has also helped multiple school leaders become principals and associate principals.

Prior to his time at Roosevelt, Steven served as an associate principal at North High School and East High School in Des Moines Public Schools. He also spent time at University School of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, he served in multiple capacities, including associate director, new teacher coordinator, middle school teacher, and high school teacher.

Schappaugh earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Drake University. He also holds a specialist in education degree from Drake and a master’s degree in management and administration from Nova Southeastern University.
