Jayden McGregory scored 26 points, Trevin Jirak added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and the Valley High School boys basketball team beat Waukee Northwest 61-47 in the Class 4A State Championship on Friday, March 14 at Wells Fargo Arena.
The win marks Valley’s third consecutive state championship, just the sixth program in state history to achieve a three-peat. The Tigers finished the season with a record of 23-3.
Zay Robinson added 15 points for the Tigers, who outscored the Wolves 36-20 in the paint and finished plus-11 in rebounds.
Valley built a 15-point lead in the first half before Northwest cut the lead to three in the third quarter. Valley led by just five with four minutes left in the game, but outscored the Wolves 15-6 down the stretch. McGregory led the Tigers with 9 points in the deciding run, including an emphatic breakaway dunk.
McGregory and Yirak earned places on the all-tournament team. McGregory was named captain of the all-tournament team.
