A colleague who nominated Glaser for this award noted that she is not only an outstanding teacher of STEM, but an outstanding example to any secondary educator of how to develop and implement engaging, hands-on, and relevant curriculum.
One example of her inventive approach to teaching is the extended Block Biology-Chemistry class she co-created with her teaching partner. Collaborating with organizations such as Polk County Conservation, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Metro Waste Authority, and MidAmerican Energy, Glaser ensures that her students are exposed to a wide range of experiences that have a lasting impact on their education.
Now in its 10th year, the award is given annually to one full-time, licensed PK-12 teacher from each of the six STEM regions in Iowa. Each honoree is recognized for their dedication to fostering enthusiasm and igniting a passion for STEM that extends beyond the walls of the classroom, effectively equipping students for high-demand careers in the future.
Glaser has organized various field trips to help students observe first-hand how professionals use STEM in their careers. As a demonstration teacher for West Des Moines Community Schools, she shares her teaching methods and pedagogy districtwide. Her commitment to spreading her knowledge and expertise ensures that more students have access to quality STEM education within our community.
As a recipient of the 2024 Iowa STEM Teacher Award, Glaser will receive $1,500 to use for her classroom and $1,500 for personal use. She will also be recognized with her fellow recipients at a ceremony during the 2024 statewide Iowa Classrooms+Workplaces Summit on April 10.
