Jimena “Mena” Agripino — Western Hills Elementary, Preschool Teacher
Mena makes a PAWSitive impact every day by creating a classroom filled with warmth, kindness, and connection. Her positive and calm presence allows students to feel seen, valued, and supported. During my visit to her classroom, I was so impressed by the way she interacted with each of her students with patience, encouragement, and genuine care.

Mena not only educates but also empowers her students to believe in themselves and do their best. She was truly made to be a teacher, and we are so lucky to have her as part of the West Des Moines Community Schools family.

Chantel Karns — Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, Science Teacher
Chantel is an amazing educator! She is authentically here for EVERY student, not just the eager students who show excitement to learn! She makes a safe space for all students with a strong focus on inclusion and gives them the tools they need to be successful in science and to be better humans.

When students in Chantel’s classroom have challenges, she weaves her teacher magic, and through the power of connection and restoration, she builds a relationship with each and every student — most importantly those not as eager to engage for one reason or another. This is what a true teacher does!

In addition to providing a safe and effective science class, Chantel is also the strong leader of her PLC and a resource to all in the building when it comes to matters of our contract. Chantel is one in a million!

Rod Ortiz — Hillside Elementary, Custodian

It is with great pride and appreciation that I nominate Rod, our outstanding night custodian, as an individual that makes a PAWSitive Impact at Hillside Elementary. Rod consistently goes above and beyond in every aspect of his role, and his dedication has a meaningful and lasting impact on our school community.

Rod approaches his work with unwavering commitment and professionalism. Our building is hands-down the cleanest and most well-kept thanks to his tireless effort, attention to detail, and pride in doing things the right way. Whether it’s keeping classrooms spotless, responding quickly to unexpected needs, or helping with after-hours events, Rod ensures our school is always at its best.

But what makes Rod’s impact truly PAWSitive goes beyond the physical space — it’s the relationships he builds along the way. He is always ready to lend a hand, even when he’s in the middle of his own work. His supportive, team-first attitude lifts up those around him and sets a strong example of what it means to be dependable and kind.

Rod also makes an effort to connect with students in small but meaningful ways. When students are being dismissed at the end of the school day, he takes time to greet them, share a laugh, or offer a friendly word. He’s always up for a great conversation with any staff member he crosses paths with, and these interactions help foster a welcoming environment where students and staff feel seen and valued.

On a personal note, when I find myself working late into the evening, Rod never fails to brighten the mood. He’ll check in with a friendly smile and an easygoing conversation — and more than once, he’s brought me a crisp, cold Coke to help keep me motivated. What’s even more meaningful is that Rod always makes a point to escort staff to their cars after dark, just to make sure we get there safely. It’s these small, thoughtful gestures that show just how much he cares about the people around him.

Rod is an unsung hero of our school. His contributions may happen after the final bell rings, but the effect of his work and his positive spirit is felt all day long. He embodies the heart of the PAWSitive Impact Award — creating a school culture built on respect, support, and genuine care.
