Michelle Knox has been named the next assistant principal at Westridge Elementary, pending approval by the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education.

Knox currently serves as a  building improvement leader at Willowbrook Elementary in the Southeast Polk Community School District, a role she has held for two years. Her anticipated start date is July 15, 2026. 

“Michelle has extensive experience handling the day-to-day operations of a school building, successfully managing staff, spearheading attendance initiatives, and fostering a welcoming, supportive culture,” Westridge Principal Jody Kerchal said. “She excels at building relationships and is regarded for her positive energy and exceptional communication skills. She is always the first to bring educators together to brainstorm, collaborate, and design proactive plans to ensure both student and staff success.”

Knox’s background is as a music teacher, serving as the head vocal music teacher for grades K-5 at Willowbrook Elementary before moving into her current role. Prior to her time at Southeast Polk, she taught elementary music in Des Moines Public Schools, Winterset, and De Soto. She also served two years as the Iowa Youth Chorus Children’s Choir Director. 

Knox earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from Grand View University before earning a master’s in culturally responsive leadership and instruction from Drake University. 

Knox replaces Tyson Heuton, who served Westridge as assistant principal for three years. Heuton was named principal at Western Hills Elementary in June.
