Dr. Stephanie Laird has been named the next multilingual program director at West Des Moines Community Schools, pending Board of Education approval. 

Laird currently serves as a learning supports coordinator for the Southeast Polk School District, a position she’s held for five years. She brings 17 years of experience to WDMCS, spending time as a teacher, instructional coach, and learning supports coordinator. 

She will begin her new role July 1, 2026.

In addition to her position with Southeast Polk, Laird is an adjunct professor at Upper Iowa University. Before moving to her district-level role, Laird spent 10 years as a Title I math and reading teacher and instructional coach at Mitchellville Elementary. She began her career in education as a science teacher at Interstate 35 Middle School. 

“Dr. Laird’s experience in a similar-sized district where she also supports ESOL and World Language will be a valuable asset to our team,” said Steven Schappaugh, WDMCS executive director of secondary education. “Her asset-based mindset around instruction and student support aligns with our values.” 

Laird is a three-time graduate of Iowa State University. She earned a bachelor of science in elementary education, a master of education in curriculum and instructional technology, and a doctorate in education with a literacy emphasis.
