What is the WDMCS Student Scholarship Fund?
The WDMCS Student Scholarship Fund, a division of the West Des Moines Community Schools Foundation, is a locally operated and supported, nonprofit, tax-exempt scholarship foundation founded in 1993 and operated by an all-volunteer board of directors, The purpose of the WDMCS Student Scholarship Fund is to expand access to educational opportunities by involving and assisting our community in the support of students and in the encouragement of educational achievement.
Why is the WDMCS Student Scholarship Fund so important?
Rising costs are closing doors to higher education for many individuals in our community. Through the WDMCS Scholarship Fund, we have an opportunity to make a strong, collective statement about the importance of education beyond high school. We can provide both encouragement and financial support for local students.
How are funds for local awards provided?
Each year our community is invited to demonstrate support for local students through a variety of fundraising activities. Individuals and businesses participate in the WDMCS Student Scholarship Fund Gold Outing in June, all proceeds of which go into the general scholarship fund. Support also comes from the generous support of businesses, service organizations and individuals who desire to sponsor scholarships in their name. Memorial Scholarships, to honor a loved one, can also be established.
Who may apply for a scholarship?
Any graduating senior of Valley High School or Walnut Creek Campus is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships can be for a two-year, four-year or vocational and technical college.
How are local scholarships awarded?
By completing a common form, applicants become eligible for several local awards. Applicants are scored anonymously by trained volunteers serving on the awards committee. Applicants receive points for a variety of qualities, including academic record, school and community involvement, educational objectives, work experience and financial need. In this way, the selection process is objective and non-discriminatory, making scholarships available to a wide range of deserving students planning on attending an accredited post-secondary institutions.
