Communication in Languages Other than English
School districts have an obligation to ensure meaningful communication in a language they can understand with parents who speak languages other than English. West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) provides interpretation and translation services to their families through their Bilingual Family Liaison team, substitute interpreter group, and partnering with community organizations. We also purchase minutes to the RTT ELSA phone service, which offers over 180 languages on demand.
To support all of our students and their families, our primary focus is on interpretation.
- Interpretation: orally communicating in different languages
- allows families to ask questions, clarify information, and build a relationship with real people in our school district
- empowers families to be advocates for their children, and to actively involve them in the educational process
- Translation: the production of written information from one language to another
Serving students and parents who speak languages other than English is essential in our partnership with families to prepare all students for postsecondary learning opportunities, careers, and life.
