GT Parent Advocacy Group

  • The West Des Moines Community Schools, recognizing the important role parents play in their child's education, established a district parent advocacy group. Members of this group agree to serve as liaisons between parents in their represented buildings and district Gifted/Talented (GT) leadership. The group goals are to connect parents of gifted/talented students, provide clear communication regarding district GT programming, and increase community awareness of gifted/talented students' needs.

The group meets multiple times throughout the school year. The parent meeting objectives are to explain the philosophy/goal of the district GT program and to solicit parent input regarding the program. Meetings are held to further explain and/or acquire information concerning the district GT program.

District-wide events may be organized by the GT teaching team in coordination with the parent advocacy group.

The gifted/talented coordinators realize the importance of parents and families to the success of children. As recognition of this need, the Gifted/Talented program will continue to support and encourage a partnership among staff, student, and family.
