  • Fairmeadows Elementary - Slimefest 

    Fairmeaddws is in need of volunteers to help our Slimefest event run smoothly. It is very similar to a school carnival. We will have slime making, slime activities, game rooms, food and then help setting up and cleaning up is also needed.

  • Children's Cancer Connection - Blankets 

    The Children’s Cancer Connection is collecting blankets to send with kids to camp. Handmade polar fleece tie blankets for both boys and girls ages 5-18 are needed.

    Please drop off blankets with your name and date together in a plastic bag to the VSW main office or the Silver Cord office in the Valley Counseling Center.  Two hours of Silver Cord Credit can be earned by purchasing the fleece, making the blanket and turning it in.  Students can make one blanket a month from August to May only. PLEASE note: in order to get credit, you must remember to cut off the salvage of the fleece as well as make sure you knot the strips (not just tie them once). 2 yards of fabric should be used for both sides.To learn how to make a blanket, please review the attached directions.

  • Volunteer Recognition through United Way

    The United Way of Central Iowa is piloting a program called Wayfinders Destinations.  This program will benefit students in the following ways:
    • Promotes community involvement.
    • Raises awareness of issues facing the community
    • Provides the opportunity to earn a United Way pin and certificate award.
    • Enhances work, career, and college/scholarship applications.
    • Shares the work and impact of United Way of Central Iowa

    Students register for the program, get a guardian's signature; attend a virtual/in-person orientation event; connect with selected community partners; and then virtually log service hours. United Way will provide each participant with an online tracking form to record all volunteer hours. All hours must be verifiable and supported with the signature of a supervisor. Students must complete 15 hours between March 1 and August 30th. See Volunteer Interest Form:

  • American Lung Association - Fight For Air Climb 

    The American Lung Association in Iowa is looking for event volunteers to help with the 2024 Fight for Air Climb. This is a great opportunity for students seeking to fulfill their Silver Cord hours while making a positive impact in the community. 

    The 2024 Fight for Air Climb is the American Lung Association's main fundraising event in Iowa. Participants climb the stairs of four prominent buildings in downtown Des Moines to raise funds and awareness for lung disease and lung health. 

    We anticipate having 800 participants at this year’s event, and we need the help of volunteers to make it happen! Some of the areas where volunteers are needed on event day are: Greeters, Gear check, Registration, Start line and finish lines at each building, Stairwell Cheerleaders and Motivators, and Finish line celebration.

  • Lutheran Church of Hope - Kids' Easter Activities 

    Volunteers are needed to help run different stations throughout the day at our Kids' Easter Activities event. Volunteers can sign up for 1.5 hour time slots and pick which station they would like to help with. More information will be sent out about the specific station selected prior to the event. The volunteers' main role is to help ensure their area is running smoothly and help with passing out materials/giveaways. 

    Please only sign up for the Kids's Actvities on Saturday 3/30.  Hospitality and Parking Opportunities are not eligible for Silver Cord credit.

  • What's the IAA Youth Board? The IAA Youth Board is not just a board – it's a powerhouse of young minds shaping the future! We're on a mission to bring fresh ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to the Iowa Afterschool Alliance.   • Clive Community Services - Food Pantry & Clothes Closet Shopper 

    Pantry volunteers walk alongside clients as they select their food and personal care products. Guide clients through the shopping area, let them know how many items they can select from each category, help clients with low English literacy identify products, bag groceries, help clients load items into their vehicle as needed, receive donations, and help tidy up at the end of the shift. Clothes closet volunteers call clients in one at a time, assist clients in finding what they need, and tidy up between clients. The minimum volunteer age is 14.   • WDM Human Services - Clothing Closet Volunteer 

    The Clothing Closet at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to accept, sort and straighten donations of clothing, shoes, toys, books and small housewares. Volunteers will also assist shoppers as needed, and keep the room neat and tidy. Shifts are available on Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, as well as the first Saturday morning of each month.     The Junior Counselor plays an important role in making the day camp experience at Living History Farms a fun educational experience!   • Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden - Camp Assistant, Drop-In Activities, Activities Tables 

    Camp Assistant, March 12th to 15th 

    (single full day (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) or half day shifts (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 pm. Or 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. available) 

    Provide support to staff and assist with activities, provide guidance to campers as needed and help with clean-up. The theme for camp is ARTrageous! Some outside activity may be included activities, so volunteers should dress for the weather. A background check is required for this position. 

    Drop-in Activities, March 12th to 16th 

    Shifts 10:45AM – 1PM and 1PM to 3:15PM 

    Welcome guests, process payment and assist with providing materials and keeping work spaces tidy as guests make an air plant home to take home. Available shifts for this activity are Wednesday 12/27 1PM – 3:30PM; Friday 12/29 10:30AM -1PM; or 1PM -3:30PM and Saturday 12/30 1PM-3:30. This position requires Altru knowledge (payment processing system) or willingness to learn it.

    The role is fun for those who are outgoing and enjoy helping people learn.   • Dance Without Limits - Dance Without Limits Spring 2024 Session

    Dance Without Limits is a non-profit that provides a dance program for children with disabilities who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the joy of dance. We run 7-10 week sessions each fall and spring and are seeking volunteers for our spring 2024 session! Dance experience is not required.

    Classes are held on Sunday afternoons at the School of Classical Ballet and Dance in West Des Moines. Each class is approximately an hour long and you can volunteer for up to three. Volunteers stay with their same class(es) throughout the session.

  • WesleyLife Edgewater - Activity Coordination with Senior Citizens 

    WesleyLife's Edgewater location offers our senior residents various activities and events throughout the year. Come engage with residents in independent living, assisted living, memory care, and/or long term care for our special events or routine activities. Special events may include our New Year's party, concerts, Galentines event, St. Patrick's Day celebration, etc. Routine activities would include board games, trivia, card games, puzzles, Wii bowling, exercise, music, root beer "Float Fridays," crafts, etc. You would have the flexibility to volunteer just once, or be a continuous volunteer.   • City of Johnston - Kites on the Green 

    Kites on the Green is an annual kite festival which includes public kite flying, professional kite flyers demonstrations, kids kite building, music and more! Lots of help is needed to make this event successful and multiple shifts are available. Among other things, volunteers may be asked to help kids/families build kites, assist at special activities, staff information or donation booths, etc.

    Become a teammate with our Courage Programs. Can Play's Courage programs work with our participants who have special health care needs. All our programs are adapted to ensure everyone, whether they have a physical, cognitive or emotional challenge, can play!

  • Blank Park Zoo - Zoo Crew 

    This is a special volunteer opportunity for youth ages 13-17 to get involved at the Blank Park Zoo! Participants will have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas around the Zoo. This may include: assisting Summer Safari camp counselors, providing guests with directional and educational information about the Zoo, helping to keep the Zoo clean and volunteering during family-friendly events!
