Children's Cancer Connection - Blankets
The Children’s Cancer Connection is collecting blankets to send with kids to camp. Handmade polar fleece tie blankets for both boys and girls ages 5-18 are needed.
Please drop off blankets with your name and date together in a plastic bag to the VSW main office or the Silver Cord office in the Valley Counseling Center. Two hours of Silver Cord Credit can be earned by purchasing the fleece, making the blanket and turning it in. Students can make one blanket a month from August to May only. PLEASE note: in order to get credit, you must remember to cut off the salvage of the fleece as well as make sure you knot the strips (not just tie them once). 2 yards of fabric should be used for both sides.To learn how to make a blanket, please review the attached directions.

Westridge - School Play
Westridge Elementary produces a school play every year. We need volunteers to help students learn lines, make costumes, work on sets, apply makeup, etc. We have weekly rehearsals available for volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Recognition through United Way
The United Way of Central Iowa is piloting a program called Wayfinders Destinations. This program will benefit students in the following ways:
• Promotes community involvement.
• Raises awareness of issues facing the community
• Provides the opportunity to earn a United Way pin and certificate award.
• Enhances work, career, and college/scholarship applications.
• Shares the work and impact of United Way of Central IowaStudents register for the program, get a guardian's signature; attend a virtual/in-person orientation event; connect with selected community partners; and then virtually log service hours. United Way will provide each participant with an online tracking form to record all volunteer hours. All hours must be verifiable and supported with the signature of a supervisor. The Freestore - Assist with Warehouse Tasks
The FreeStore was started in 2001 to provide furniture for women leaving the domestic violence shelter in Des Moines. As the community learned of our mission, it responded generously and we were able to expand our services to referrals from all Iowa DV agencies and other Des Moines human services agencies, schools and churches. The first year, 2001, we gave furniture to 7 families. Now we serve over 250 families a year with over 200 tons of furniture. Items we can’t use are passed to other agencies, whenever possible.
Assist in the warehouse with various tasks such as putting together modular furniture, sorting donations, organizing stock, cleaning donated furniture, etc.

Adaptive Sports Iowa - Split the Pot Fundraiser
Students will help fundraise for Adaptive Sports Iowa (ASI) by selling raffle tickets at home Iowa Wild hockey games. The volunteers will assist in selling
raffle tickets throughout the games up until the end of the second intermission. At that point, a drawing will take place and the proceeds raised during the game will be split between the winning ticket and Adaptive Sports Iowa to provide sports and recreation opportunities for Iowans with physical and visual disabilities. This is a tremendous fundraising opportunity for our organization that will have profound effects on our ability to serve our mission.
The system in place for the volunteers is extremely user-friendly. Each volunteer will have a wireless device that will print the ticket as well as update
a real-time amount ticker on the scoreboard. Students will be responsible for handling cash during their volunteer shift.
Each volunteer will receive free admission into the game and a free ticket to another regular-season game!

Clive Community Services - Food Pantry & Clothes Closet Shopper
Pantry volunteers walk alongside clients as they select their food and personal care products. Guide clients through the shopping area, let them know how many items they can select from each category, help clients with low English literacy identify products, bag groceries, help clients load items into their vehicle as needed, receive donations, and help tidy up at the end of the shift. Clothes closet volunteers call clients in one at a time, assist clients in finding what they need, and tidy up between clients. The minimum volunteer age is 14. Clive Community Services – Laundry Pod Packet (assembled at home)
Silver Cord volunteers can earn 2 hours of Silver Cord credit per month for assembling laundry pod packets for our food pantry clients. Take one laundry pod, wrap in a dryer sheet, tie with a ribbon or twist tie and put in a Ziplock. Each Ziploc should have five laundry pods packets in it. Volunteers should plan to donate at least 8 Ziplock bags of five apiece. Thank you!

Dance Without Limits - Dance Without Limits Fall 2023 Session
Dance Without Limits is a non-profit that provides a dance program for children with disabilities who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the joy of dance. We run 7-10 week sessions each fall and spring and are seeking volunteers for our fall 2023 session! Dance experience is not required.
Classes are held on Sunday afternoons at the School of Classical Ballet and Dance in West Des Moines. Each class is approximately an hour long and you
can volunteer for up to three. Volunteers stay with their same class(es) throughout the session.Dates: 09/17/2023-11/12/2023
