Classroom Snacks
-
Student health and wellness is a top priority for the West Des Moines Community Schools. WDMCS Nutrition Services follows the district’s wellness policy (Policy 608.01) in regards to classroom snacks.
The policy focus on districtwide health initiatives, including:
- providing access to healthy nutritional food and beverage options for all activities within the school day
- fostering daily physical activity that embraces a healthy lifestyle.
Starting in September 2021, WDMCS will again allow classroom snacks and birthday treats during the school day. Staff will prioritize students’ safety and may consider eating snacks outside, in a different space than the classroom, or with a limited number of students eating inside the classroom at one time. Grade level teams will share plans for classroom snacks with their building administrators.

Snack Lists
The following snacks lists are to reference when selecting snacks for activities during the school day and up to 30 minutes after the last bell. These lists are not required for a student's personal lunch or snack.

Do I have to purchase a snack for my student that is on the approved snack list?
