Junior High Promotion and Retention
-
Successful completion of seventh and eighth grade courses has been found to be necessary for the student to achieve success in the following year’s curriculum. Consequently, the district has established the following criteria for promotion and retention for students in grades 7 and 8.
Points are earned when a student passes a course. The point system is used as a guide by the principal in recommending the promotion or retention of a student. Other factors are considered, such as age, physical development, educational background, and unusual circumstances.
The point system is based on the number of days a course meets. Points are awarded when a student passes a course with the letter grade "D-" or better.
Core Class Grade Requirements
A student can have only one F each semester in a core class or two Fs over the course of a year. If a student has three or four Fs in core classes, they will go to summer school. If a student has five or more Fs in core classes, they are retained. If a student has an F in Math 1st semester, teachers need tp be provided interventions to reach proficiency on priority standard targets for that semester. If a student fails 2nd semester in math, they will go to summer school until they have reached proficiency on priority standard targets for that semester. Students who qualify for summer school will be provided reteaching in areas where lack of student evidence of learning has been shown only and complete the work to show proficiency on priority standards. Once proficiency is achieved, students will no longer need to attend summer school. If a student does not successfully achieve proficiency on priority standard targets, that students will be retained.
