COVID 19 Data Update

WDMCS COVID-19 Data Update

Updated Sept. 10, 2020: This data update originally stated that data displayed was from Thursday, Aug. 27-Wednesday, Sept. 2. Upon further investigation, we found that the data displayed included cases and close contacts from before Aug. 27. To see our most up-to-date data starting Aug. 27, visit our COVID-19 dashboard.

The following data contains the most up-to-date information on positive COVID-19 cases within West Des Moines Community Schools as well as data on the number of students and/or staff who have been in close contact and are now quarantined. (Close contact is defined by the CDC as within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more, regardless of personal protective equipment.)

We are also developing a dashboard that will be posted on the WDMCS website to provide up-to-date numbers on positive COVID-19 cases in our district this school year. This should be available starting Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Data displayed includes total numbers up to Wednesday, Sept. 2.

COMMUNICATION PROCESS

When a positive case is determined, we send out the following forms of communication:

  1. Phone calls to individuals who have been determined to be in close contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19.
  2. Follow-up email to individuals who have been determined to be in close contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19. This email includes resources from the Polk County Health Department
  3. Email to students/families if an entire classroom needs to temporarily move online while the space is disinfected and close contact tracing is completed. (This primarily occurs at the elementary level.)
  4. Email to all staff and families from the building impacted. WDMCS sends COVID-19 updates to on-site and online families and staff to provide full transparency. It is possible a school-wide communication may not have been sent IF the student has not been in the building since school started.
  5. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8: Updates to an online dashboard to report new cases of COVID-19 within the district.

We appreciate the patience we continue to receive from parents, students, and staff as we adapt, as needed, to support all WDMCS students and staff.
