Crossroads Park Staff Percentage Impacted by COVID-19 Results in School Transition to Online Learning
West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) consistently monitors the impact of COVID-19 throughout our district. When the ability to staff classrooms or departments is significantly impacted, district leadership will consider whether or not to temporarily move a school online.
As of Friday, Sept. 11, more than 33% of Crossroads Park staff are currently absent due to either testing positive with COVID-19 or needing to quarantine due to being considered a close contact. Close contact is defined by the CDC as within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more, regardless of personal protective equipment.
We collaborated with the Polk County Health Department and determined the need to temporarily transition Crossroads Park to online learning for Tuesday, Sept. 15, and Wednesday, Sept. 16. As a reminder, there is no school Monday, Sept. 14.
We are applying for a waiver with the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) that would allow us to keep the entire school online through Friday, Sept. 25. No activities would be allowed in the building through Sunday, Sept. 27. We will communicate more information to staff and families as soon as we hear back from the IDOE. This would allow the building to be thoroughly cleaned and remain empty until students and staff return.
Crossroads Park students will continue to receive instruction from their teachers. They will experience learning and connect with each other through a daily schedule that provides flexibility and creativity.
