ORIGINAL POST (March 24):

The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Board of Education passed a resolution on Monday, March 23, that continues to pay WDMCS teachers and staff their current wages through Sunday, April 12.

The resolution comes amid the global outbreak of COVID-19, a respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus.

“The WDMCS Board of Education is grateful to our amazing staff and their hard work during this challenging time,” said WDMCS Board of Education Vice President Jennifer Ulie-Wells, Ph.D. “We strongly value our employees, and are committed to doing what we can to take care of their well-being.”

WDMCS is closed until at least April 13. Passed unanimously by the seven-member Board, the resolution authorizes WDMCS to continue to pay hourly non-exempt employees during the districtwide closure. Certified and salaried staff will continue to receive their regular pay without needing to use any paid leave. Teachers will also not need to make up any of the days missed between now and April 10.

Additionally, the resolution allows WDMCS to identify emergency non-exempt employees—like payroll, custodial and maintenance services, and nutrition—to work on site or remotely to continue to keep the district operational. These emergency employees will be paid 1.5 times their current wage for hours worked up to April 13.

“We are committed to our staff based on the resolution recommended to the board,” said WDMCS Superintendent Lisa Remy, Ed.D. “We understand we are in a very stressful and unusual time. We have very committed employees who want to make sure we have safe environments for our staff and students, nutrition employees who are committed to feeding our students, and teachers and administrators who are providing resources to our families and students so that they can engage in learning while we are out of school.

“I am so proud of our staff, and thank each and every one of them for supporting our students, staff and families.”
