Jordan Creek Elementary Named Leader in Me Lighthouse School

West Des Moines Community Schools’ Jordan Creek Elementary has earned Lighthouse School certification from FranklinCovey, joining just 11 other Lighthouse schools in Iowa and 519 worldwide.

Earning Lighthouse certification is a significant benchmark for Leader in Me schools and serves as “evidence that schools have produced outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing the process with fidelity and excellence.”

To gain Lighthouse School certification, schools must meet nine criteria that include sharing leadership with students and letting them lead their own learning, as well as consistent leadership development for staff and collaboration with families.

The certification also demonstrates the powerful impact Jordan Creek Elementary’s work with the Leader in Me program has had on staff, students, families, and the community since it was first implemented at Jordan Creek in 2015-16. The FranklinCovey program is a “whole-school transformation process” that focuses on development in three areas—culture, leadership, and academics—and teaches “21st-century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.”

“We are excited to continue our Leader in Me journey as we help all our students grow as leaders and find their inner light to shine brightly for others to see,” Jordan Creek Elementary counselor Barb Tigges said.

The school celebrated the achievement during a student-led assembly on Friday, Nov. 22, surprising students with a personal letter from Sean Covey, president of FranklinCovey Education, and a new Lighthouse School banner that will announce their certification to visitors, as well as a glow-in-the-dark dance party that reminded them to shine their lights.
