Hillside Students Donate Blankets to Animal Rescue League of Iowa

A group of sixth-grade students from Hillside Elementary on Tuesday, Nov. 12, donated about 30 fleece blankets to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

The blankets were made in partnership with WDMCS Community Education’s Adventures in Service program called “Fleece Blankets for Shelter Pets”—an after-school volunteer opportunity.

Following the students’ kindhearted gesture, they were rewarded with a tour of the facility, and also had the opportunity to play with Heart, a “very sweet” service rabbit.

“The students were absolute models of what the ARL would like their tour groups to be,” said Erica Weeklund, WDMCS Community Education’s learning service coordinator. “The ARL said they would love to have us back. … The students were polite, asked great questions, and were respectful of the animals and the rules to protect them.”
