Fifteen WDMCS Students Earn New Iowa Seal of Biliteracy

Fifteen West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) seniors earned the Iowa Seal of Biliteracy, demonstrating that they have attained proficiency in two or more languages, one of which is English. The students will be recognized during their graduation ceremony, with the Seal noted on their diploma and official transcript.

  • Zoey McEvoy—Spanish
  • Hleil Men—Senthang, Burmese
  • Ena Moreno—Spanish
  • Yasmeen Musharafa—Arabic
  • Diana Pillado—Spanish
  • Radha Velamuri—Spanish

This is the first year the Seal of Biliteracy has been available in Iowa. Students prove their proficiency in English and a world language through various assessments. The Seal of Biliteracy not only recognizes the value of language diversity and cultural identity but prepares students with 21st-century skills that will benefit them as they begin to explore their futures after high school. The Seal also provides recognition and evidence for students’ language proficiencies and values language as an asset for students, professionals, and citizens.
