Stilwell Junior High science facilitator Kevin Atterberg earned a 2018 Special Award from Des Moines Parks and Recreation for his volunteer conservation work. Atterberg served as the Des Moines Parks and Recreation 2018 Iowa STEM Teacher Extern in summer 2018 and donated more than 240 hours researching monarchs and their habitat.

In their newsletter, Des Moines Parks and Recreation said, “Kevin Atterberg served as our 2018 Iowa S.T.E.M. Teacher Extern. Atterberg, a former Nebraska Ag Teacher of the Year, and Stilwell Junior High science teacher, donated more than 240 hours researching monarchs and their habitat in our parks. Through his volunteer experience, he learned real-world applications that he could transfer into educational opportunities in his classroom. He mapped existing monarch habitat and identified potential habitat for conservation planning efforts. Atterberg took the initiative to go above and beyond, walking every single park and identifying and mapping milkweed species and numbers of plants. We will honor Kevin Atterbergwith a 2018 Special Award for his volunteer conservation work.”

Atterberg will be honored during a Park and Recreation Board meeting on Jan. 22. Tune in to cable channel 7 DMTV at 5 p.m. to watch as Des Moines Parks and Recreation honors Atterberg and other volunteers.
