Valley Girls’ Soccer Falls in Class 3A State Semifinals

The Valley girls’ soccer team lost Friday in the Class 3A semifinals of the Iowa high school state tournament.

The third-seeded Tigers and No. 2 seed Ankeny were locked at 1-1, forcing overtime and penalty kicks. Valley fell in the shootout, 3-0.

Saturday’s 3A championship will be between Ankeny and its crosstown rival, top-seeded Ankeny Centennial.

Valley ends its season at 17-3.

PREVIOUSLY (June 7): The Valley girls’ soccer team is moving on in the Class 3A Iowa high school state tournament.

The third-seeded Tigers blanked No. 6 seed Dowling Catholic 2-0 in a quarterfinal match Thursday. Valley will face No. 2 seed Ankeny at 4:15 p.m. Friday in the semis. That match will be played on Field 6 at the James Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

Valley (16-2) is the No. 3 seed and will face sixth-seeded Dowling Catholic (12-4) at 4:45 p.m. Thursday on Field 7 at the James Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

If the Tigers win, they will advance to the semifinals and face either No. 2 Ankeny or seventh-seeded Linn-Mar at 4:15 p.m. Friday on Field 6. The 3A championship match is slated for 3 p.m. Saturday on Field 9.

Admission to the girls’ state soccer tournament is $10 for each day, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union says. You can purchase tickets in advance here.

School-aged students up to adults will be charged entry. There’s also a $5 fee for parking per day.

Valley’s Path to State Tourney

Leading up to Thursday, Valley has outscored its opponents 88-18. Valley’s only two losses on the year were to No. 1 seed Ankeny Centennial (2-1; May 4) and Ankeny (3-2; May 11). The Tigers carry an eight-match win streak into the state tournament.

During Class 3A Region 4 action, Valley:

  • Earned an opening-round bye;
  • Defeated Fort Dodge 10-0 in the semis;
  • Defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 2-0 in the finals.

One of the top scorers in 3A, senior Libby Helverson has scored 24 goals going into state — ranking third in 3A. Fellow senior Hannah Olson has scored 16 goals, tying for seventh-best in 3A.

Junior Megan Nelson is the other Valley player to be in double-digits in goals scored, with 14 of her own.

Both Helverson and Olson were recently named to the Class 3A All-Iowa girls’ soccer team by The Des Moines Register. Helverson also made the Elite team, and is one of three finalists up for player of the year honors.
