Maxwell to be Recommended as Valley High School Principal

The West Des Moines Community Schools is pleased to announce that David Maxwell has been recommended to serve as the next Valley High School principal. He will be working with retiring Valley High School Principal Tim Miller to take over the role, with an official start date of July 1, 2018.

Maxwell has served as a Valley High School associate principal for the last 13 years. He previously served as a dean of students at Hoover High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Maxwell has taken a lead role in building Valley High School’s culture and in the school’s equity work. References indicated Maxwell’s “ability to look at situations from all angles (and) listen to all involved parties to make sound, well-informed and wise decisions. He truly loves Valley High School and the West Des Moines Community School District.”

Maxwell is also passionate about and engaged with the larger West Des Moines community. He is active within his church and with the Drake Relays, serving as a clerk of course. The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce selected Maxwell as a 2017 Co-Citizen of the Year for his efforts around equity and inclusion. He was also honored as the Mary McLeod Bethune Educator of the Year in 2011.

Grundmeyer Leader Search LLC assisted West Des Moines Community Schools with the recruiting and hiring process. Maxwell was selected from a pool of 22 applicants. Five candidates were from outside the state of Iowa, and six candidates had 12 or more years of administrative experience. All applicants were objectively screened, and multiple initial interviews were conducted.

Two finalists were invited to participate in formal interviews with students, staff, parents, teachers, and administrators. Feedback from the formal interviews informed and affirmed the Superintendency’s decision to offer Maxwell the position.

West Des Moines Community Schools is very pleased to have this opportunity to continue working with Maxwell in his new leadership position.
