2018-19 Calendar Approved
The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Board of Education approved a calendar for the 2018-19 school year at its Dec. 11 meeting, setting Thursday, Aug. 23, as the first day of school. Get the highlights online. The Calendar at a Glance will be available on the district website soon.
WDMCS Recommends 10-Year Facilities Planning Framework
After months of collaboration and research, WDMCS plans to present several recommendations to the Board of Education as the framework for the next 10-Year Facilities Plan. The recommendations were based on feedback WDMCS received through the facilities planning survey available to families, students, and staff this fall. BrainSpaces worked with WDMCS to gather and analyze the information before providing several recommendations.

Visitor Management System Integrated Districtwide This January
New visitor check-in system Raptor will be integrated districtwide in January 2018. Several WDMCS buildings helped test the system to enhance building security and safety for students. That testing period is complete, and WDMCS will permanently use the new system in all school buildings beginning Tuesday, Jan. 16. Learn more about Raptor.
Valley High School Principal Search Update
WDMCS continues to search for a new principal of Valley High School. Current principal Tim Miller will retire at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Grundmeyer Leader Search presented a slate of 22 candidates to the district administration on Wednesday, Dec. 6. After reviewing all of the data, superintendency chose six candidates for screening interviews on Dec. 13.
The final interviews are set for Jan. 9, 2018. Staff, students, parents, and administrators, will be involved in the interviews.
School Board Approves 2018-19 Programs of Study
The WDMCS Board of Education reviewed and approved several programs of study proposals at its Dec. 11 meeting. See the full list of proposals and approvals online .
“Thank You” Notes New Method of Recognition

Board President, Valley Principal Earn Awards
Congratulations to two West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) leaders who recently earned prestigious awards from statewide organizations.
Board President Melinda Dunnwald earned her second consecutive Individual Achievement Award at the Iowa Association of School Boards’ (IASB) Annual Convention on Nov. 16. Learn more about her award.
Valley High School Principal Tim Miller was selected by the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association to receive the Outstanding School Administrator Award. Learn more about his award.
Summer Sports Camp Survey
WDMCS is seeking input to learn how many families would be interested in having their children participate in a six-week sports performance camp during summer 2018. This camp would be geared for incoming seventh- and eighth-grade students and would introduce them to strength and conditioning at an age-appropriate level.
