Stilwell Junior High Named National Blue Ribbon School

Stilwell Junior High was named one of 342 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2017 by the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday, Sept. 28. Stilwell is one of five Iowa schools and the only junior high school in Iowa to be recognized as a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School.

“This is an award celebrating our Stilwell community past and present,” Principal Eric Boyle said during a schoolwide assembly. “We have a wonderful culture here at this school, and it’s the people before us and currently here who have put these cornerstones in place that mean so much to this school…. I’m so excited for everyone and extremely proud to be a Stilwellian today.”

Boyle also thanked the school faculty and staff, the district superintendent and administration, as well as students’ families and Stilwell’s community partners.

Stilwell was recognized as an exemplary high performing school. Schools nominated for exemplary achievement must be among Iowa’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests to earn this coveted award. Students at each tested grade must be in the top 15 percent of schools in reading and mathematics.

“National Blue Ribbon Schools are active demonstrations of preparing every child for a bright future,” U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos told the honorees during a livestream announcement. “You are visionaries, innovators and leaders.”

All 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools are invited to celebrate this honor at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., Nov. 6-7, 2017.

Congratulations, Stilwell Junior High!
