School Board on Tour, Visits Stilwell
On Monday, Jan. 25, the West Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education will visit Stilwell Junior High, located at 1601 Vine Street in West Des Moines. The Board will highlight Stilwell’s programs, teachers, and students and experience classroom demonstrations during its workshop session starting at 5:15 p.m. The regular business meeting will follow at 7 p.m. in Stilwell’s auditorium.
Iowa School Report Card Released
The Iowa Department of Education on Dec. 16 released the Iowa School Report Card, a new web-based data system for each public school based on performance measures, such as student attendance and graduation rates. District Offering Free Evening Meals for Children
The West Des Moines Community Schools Nutrition Services department is offering a free evening meal for children from 5:30–6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday night during the school year, excluding school breaks. An optional educational or enriching activity will be offered after each meal, from 6–6:30 p.m. The meal will be served at Crestview School of Inquiry. Valley High School Named to NFL Super Bowl Honor Roll
Valley High School alum and former National Football League (NFL) player Justin Hartwig will present Valley administrators with a commemorative Wilson Golden Football during halftime at the Jan. 29 Valley home basketball game. The game starts at 7:45 p.m. A reception with Hartwig in the Valley commons area will follow the game.
The football presentation is part of the NFL’s Super Bowl High School Honor Roll initiative, which recognizes high schools and communities that contributed to Super Bowl history. The Honor Roll initiative is one way the NFL is celebrating upcoming Super Bowl 50. Learn more here.
District Legislative Priorities for 2016
The 2016 Iowa legislative session convened on Monday, Jan. 11, and will adjourn on Tuesday, April 19. The West Des Moines Community Schools district prepared for the session by discussing the needs of the district and setting legislative priorities. District administrators, parents, and the Board of Education also met with legislators this fall to discuss the legislative priorities.
