A head shot of Stephanie Hansen

Valley’s Hansen Selected to Grammy Camp

vhs-stephanie-hansenValley senior Stephanie Hansen (Clive) has been selected to the prestigious GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session as a vocalist. She will perform with the top 32 jazz instrumentalists and vocalists of the nation in conjunction with the GRAMMY Awards in late January.  She is the only Iowa student selected for this honor and just one of two students from the Midwest.

Hansen’s selection launches her into the spotlight surrounding the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards, and provides her with unparalleled opportunities to perform in front of some of music’s biggest names.

“Stephanie is not only a talented vocalist, she is also an extremely smart musician,” said Valley choral director Haley Gibbons. “She has a great ear and she sings jazz repertoire with a style and maturity beyond that of most high school students. Her selection for the Grammy Band is an incredible honor, and Stephanie will undoubtedly have an amazing experience as she performs with other talented students from across the country.”

Hansen has been actively involved in both vocal and instrumental music throughout her educational career, earning numerous awards and honors. Notable among those are:  being selected as an All-State clarinetist, playing alto saxophone with the state champion Valley High School jazz band jazz orchestra, singing with the state champion Valley High School jazz choir Vocalese, and performing with the all-state jazz choir since her sophomore year. She received recognition at the state jazz choir competition as the large school class Outstanding Female Performer as a sophomore.

The GRAMMY Camp students, representing 30 cities and 12 states, will travel to Los Angeles for a weeklong musical adventure under the direction of Justin DiCioccio of the Manhattan School of Music, Dr. Ron McCurdy of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and associate choral director Susanna Wegner of Kansas City, Mo.

The selected students will perform at various GRAMMY Week events including — for the fifth year — an appearance at GRAMMY In The Schools Live! — A Celebration Of Music & Education, sponsored by Ford Motor Company Fund. This event, which is open to the public, will showcase the selectees along with student alumni from GRAMMY Camp and GRAMMY Signature Schools and special guest artists, on Jan. 22, 2014, at the University of Southern California. The group will offer another public performance at Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment with a special guest artist on Jan. 23. GRAMMY Camp — Jazz Session members will also attend the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Jan. 26 as guests of The Recording Academy and will perform at the GRAMMY Celebration after-party.

The GRAMMY Camp — Jazz Session selectees are eligible for more than $2 million in college scholarships made possible through the GRAMMY Foundation’s college partners: Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and USC Thornton School of Music. In addition, each selectee’s school will receive a professional cymbal courtesy of the Zildjian Company.
