School board members play significant roles in their communities. School board members are locally elected public officials charged with policy-making, appraisal and evaluation. The school board has the further duty of providing the financial means by which the educational program is conducted. It will also ensure that the community will be informed of the needs, purposes, values and status of the schools.

School board members are elected to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years. Those elected receive no pay.
