WDMCS Sends Four to Iowa National Geography Bee

Westridge fifth grader Pramit Vyas, Jordan Creek fifth grader Animesh Joshi, Indian Hills eighth grader Kacey Baker and Stilwell eighth grader Ben Koele have been named semifinalists in the 2013 Iowa National Geographic Bee.

Bees were held in schools with fourth through eighth graders throughout the state to determine each school’s winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. Students with the top 100 scores were invited to compete at the state level.

The 2013 Iowa National Geographic Bee will be held at the DMACC Ankeny Campus on April 5. The state winner will receive $100, the Complete National Geographic on DVD and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he/she will represent Iowa in the national finals May 20-22. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the Society. The national winner will also travel with a parent/guardian on an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands, experiencing geography firsthand through up-close encounters with the wildlife and landscape of Galapagos.

The final round of the National Geographic Bee, moderated by Alex Trebek, will air May 23 on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild.
