2013-14 Calendar Approved

Students may be anticipating the upcoming winter break, but the WDMCS Board of Education is already thinking about the first day of school for next year.

In fact, parents and students can circle August 20, 2013 on their calendars as the start of the 2013-14 school year.

At its meeting on Monday, Dec. 10, the board approved the 2013-14 district calendar and authorized administration to ask the Iowa Department of Education if the district can start classes before September 1. According to Iowa law, districts must receive a waiver if they want to hold classes before September 1. Nearly all school districts in the state of Iowa request and receive this annual waiver.

A district must hold a public hearing on the proposed “early start date” in order to be considered for a waiver. The WDMCS held its hearing Monday night. No member of the public spoke during the hearing.

The district had already gathered public input in developing the 2013-14 district calendar through the WDMCS Idea Share, the district’s online community forum. Approximately 430 people voted on three calendar options provided and were able to offer additional comments about what they would like to see for a calendar. Fifty-three percent selected the recommended calendar.

The approved calendar features the following dates:

  • First Student Day: August 20
  • Winter Break: December 23-January 1
  • End of Semester 1: January 10 (90 days)
  • Flex Days (Teachers): November 27 & March 14
  • No School for Students/Staff Work Days: September 16, October 14, January 20, February 21, April 18
  • Spring Break: March 17-21
  • Last Student Day: May 30 (90 days)
