Scieszinski Named Living History Farms Teacher of the Year
Indian Hills math teacher Jackie Scieszinski was named the Living History Farms Teacher of the Year on behalf of the Zephyr team. This award recognizes the efforts of a K-12 teacher who strives to bring history to life for his or her students by incorporating a program or tour from Living History Farms into their curriculum.
The Indian Hills Zephyr team has been taking students to Living History Farms for more than 20 years. Scieszinski has accompanied students on the trip for 16 of those 20 years.
“Through the years some of the activities have changed,” noted Scieszinski, “but the basic concept and philosophy behind this experience has remained the same: students are working together and experiencing – hands-on – life before technology.”
Some of the tasks the Zephyr team students perform during the field trips are daily chores, working with animals, exploring different types of power, cooking over an open fire and making tools from iron. Connections are made to classroom lessons in English, math, science and social studies.
“For many of our students, this really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Scieszinski. “When visiting with former students, Living History Farms is often one of their fondest memories. It certainly is one of the things of which I am most proud to share with my students.”
