Drama students watch presentation on bullying

Drama Students Focus on Bullying

Nate Monson from Iowa Safe Schools met with the Valley High School drama department to talk about bullying as the cast and crew prepare for this year’s fall play, “Kes,” which focuses on that topic.

Monson walked the students through “The Great Game of High School,” an exercise that walks a group through identifying peer groups and discussing how those groups can both be bullies and prevent bullying from happening.

“With the Great Game of High School, you develop quadrants of how we put people in different groups,” said Monson. “With this exercise, we can detect your school climate.

“Many people don’t like the game because it highlights stereotypes,” he added, “but it’s very telling. I could go to your lunchroom and find these exact groups.”

As the drama department continues to prepare for the fall play, students are planning outreach activities to Indian Hills and Stilwell junior highs to talk about bullying.

The fall play is scheduled for Nov. 2-3 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in the VHS auditorium.
