Walnut Creek Campus Wows Students on First Day

ImageStaff at Walnut Creek Campus were welcomed with hellos and hugs as students walked through the doors of their new school on the first day of the 2012-13 school year. A year ago, they learned they would be moving into a newly renovated school building and today, students got to walk through the doors for the first time.

“It’s actually like a real high school here,” said senior Dareion Vanderberg, “and hopefully people look at us like a high school now.”

Smiles were on the faces of everyone roaming the halls as they greeted friends and found where their classes would be. Students were shooting some hoops in the gym and enjoying breakfast in the cafeteria, both of which are the first the school has ever had.

Sophomore Crystal Howard also liked what she saw when she walked in the doors. “Just the way you walk in and it’s a nice clean hallway. It’s big. I might get lost a couple times.”

Walnut Creek Campus had called a converted church its home for the past 12 years. Classrooms were separated by partitions and there was no gym or cafeteria. After being used for many years as a swing school during renovations at elementary buildings across the district, the Clegg Park Elementary building became the new home for Walnut Creek Campus.

“Staff and students have been very excited about the new building,” said Principal Dr. Kim Davis. “Teachers are enjoying the large windows and the larger learning space. The gym and the cafeteria have been well received by all. It has been a very exciting week at WCC! We are very excited to be in our new learning environment.”

An open house will be scheduled for alumni and the public to come tour the new building.
